Finished quartz countertop installation — Blackwood Kitchens Ontario

Step 1: Free In-Home Consultation and Rough Measurement

The process begins with a free in-home consultation at your home across the Waterloo Region. During this visit, a Blackwood Kitchens consultant:

  • Measures your countertop surfaces (length and width of all sections)
  • Assesses the current countertop material and substrate condition
  • Discusses edge profile options, sink style (undermount, drop-in, farmhouse), and quartz selections
  • Notes any special requirements — curved sections, peninsula overhang, waterfall island
  • Provides a written, itemized quote

This consultation takes 45–90 minutes in most homes. You'll leave with a clear picture of the timeline, cost, and options. There is no obligation to proceed.

Step 2: Material Selection and Contract

Once you decide to proceed, the next step is finalizing your material choices. You can visit our Cambridge showroom at 131 Sheldon Dr, Unit 19 to review quartz slab samples in person (recommended — the difference between a 6-inch chip and a full slab is significant), or we can bring a curated selection of samples to your home.

Key decisions at this stage:

  • Quartz brand and specific colour/pattern
  • Edge profile (eased, beveled, mitered waterfall, ogee)
  • Sink model and undermount style
  • Faucet hole position(s)
  • Any seam placement requirements for large kitchens

A deposit is collected at contract signing. Fabrication is scheduled immediately.

Step 3: Precision Template (Measurement Day)

Before any cutting begins, your kitchen receives a precision template. A Blackwood Kitchens technician visits your home and creates an exact digital template of every countertop surface — every angle, every cabinet irregularity, every cutout position.

Templating takes 30–60 minutes in most Ontario kitchens. It requires the existing countertops to still be in place, the sink to be removed (or its exact placement decided), and all appliances in their final positions. Templating is done after cabinet installation is complete if you're doing a concurrent refacing project.

Precision templating is critical — it's what ensures your quartz pieces fit perfectly the first time, with no gaps, overhangs, or misaligned seams.

Step 4: Fabrication (5–10 Business Days)

Your template is sent to the fabrication shop where your quartz slabs are cut, edged, polished, and drilled. Modern CNC stone fabrication equipment ensures mitre-cut precision and consistency that hand-cutting cannot achieve.

Fabrication typically takes 5–10 business days for most Ontario kitchen projects. Complex projects (multiple waterfall edges, book-matched panels, radius sections) may take longer. You'll receive a confirmed installation date at the time of templating.

Step 5: Countertop Removal (Day of Installation)

On installation day, the Blackwood Kitchens team arrives at your home and removes the existing countertops first. Old countertops are typically removed in sections and disposed of. Existing plumbing connections at the sink are disconnected at this stage.

Countertop removal takes 1–2 hours for a standard Ontario kitchen. The substrate (top of the cabinet boxes) is inspected and leveled if necessary before the new quartz is set.

Step 6: Quartz Installation

Quartz sections are brought in and dry-fit before adhesive is applied. For multi-section kitchens, seams are planned during dry-fit to ensure minimum visibility and structural integrity. Once alignment is confirmed, sections are set with silicone adhesive, seams are filled and polished, and the sink and faucet hardware are reinstalled.

A standard Ontario kitchen quartz installation takes 4–7 hours on installation day. Larger kitchens with multiple sections, waterfall islands, and complex seaming may take a full day.

Step 7: Cure and Completion

Silicone adhesive requires 24 hours to cure fully. You can use the kitchen normally after installation day — the countertop is stable immediately after the adhesive sets (within 2–3 hours). Avoid heavy impact on the edges and seams for the first 24 hours.

Total elapsed time from consultation to installed countertops: 3–4 weeks for most Ontario projects.

Frequently Asked Questions — Quartz Installation Ontario

How long does quartz countertop installation take in Ontario?

Installation day in your Ontario kitchen takes 4–7 hours for a standard kitchen. The full project timeline from initial consultation to installed countertops is 3–4 weeks — including consultation, material selection, templating, fabrication, and installation day.

Do I need to remove my old countertops before quartz is installed?

No. Blackwood Kitchens removes your existing countertops as part of the installation service. You don't need to do anything before installation day other than ensure the kitchen is cleared of items stored on the countertops and that access to the sink plumbing is available.

Can I use my kitchen while quartz is being fabricated?

Yes — fabrication runs entirely off-site. There is no disruption to your Ontario kitchen during the 5–10 business day fabrication period. Your kitchen is only disrupted on installation day itself, when countertops are removed and new ones installed.

How are quartz seams handled in large Ontario kitchens?

Seam placement is planned during the templating visit to minimize visibility. Seams are positioned in low-traffic areas (away from the sink and primary work zones) and filled with colour-matched epoxy, then polished to near-invisibility. In very large kitchens, some seaming is unavoidable — but professional fabrication minimizes visual impact significantly.

What is the warranty on Blackwood Kitchens quartz countertop installations in Ontario?

Blackwood Kitchens warranties the installation workmanship on all quartz countertop projects. Material warranties vary by quartz brand. Call (519) 281-1000 for warranty details specific to the quartz brand selected at your consultation.
